Temple of Dionysus in Iria

One of the greatest temples of Naxos was established in Iria in the 14th century BC. The temple was dedicated to Dionysus and another woman deity. The worship of the gods from the Mycenaean (14th century BC) to the mid-Geometric period (800-750 BC) took place outdoors. Then four successive buildings were built at the same location and this is the birth of the marble architecture of the Greek islands.

This temple was converted into a Christian basilica in the 5th-6th century AD but due to the successive floods, the church was abandoned and the gatherings of the believers were continued in the neighboring church of St. George.

Nowadays, the University of Athens in cooperation with the Technical University of Munich are in the process of restoring the monumental temple of the Archaic period (580 BC).
